The Zr.Ms. Karel Doorman project illustrates Royal Netherlands Navy’s trust in Alewijnse as a partner in complex naval projects.

HNLMS Karel Doorman

The HNLMS Karel Doorman is a 204-metre, 28,000 tonne logistical support ship. The vessel is not only designed for sea transport and supply at sea. It also serves as a mobile base for transport helicopters, which are capable of quickly relocating heavy materials and troops. At the same time, the ship can play a vital supporting role in actions of a humanitarian nature.

Large project

The JSS was one the largest orders received for a single ship by Alewijnse. It concerned the steelwork and cabling of all the ship’s installations, including:

  • HV (High Voltage) power
  • Signals
  • Fiber-optics
  • Cat7-cable for the various high-tech systems
  • Connection, testing and delivery of the infrastructure.

Ship's construction

Eighty percent of the ship’s construction was carried out at the Damen shipyard in Galati, Romania. Alewijnse Marine Galati, was responsible for the bulk of the installation work. Alewijnse Nijmegen provided supporting project management. Final assembly, installation and delivery of various nautical and armament systems takes place at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding in Vlissingen.

Royal Netherlands Navy

This project illustrated Royal Netherlands Navy’s interest and trust in Alewijnse as a partner in these types of complex projects. Earlier joint projects are the four patrol vessels, maintenance of the M-frigates and power distribution units (PDU’s) for the signal masts placed on board patrol ships.
