Third offshore patrol vessel for the Pakistan Navy
Alewijnse has successfully completed its latest electrical system integration project, on board the PNS HUNAIN. It is the third ship in a series of four YARMOOK-Class Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) being built for the Pakistan Navy at Damen Shipyards Galati, Romania, a facility renowned for its expertise in building complex, high-performance vessels.
Delivery took place at Damen Shipyards Galati
Unique machinery control system
Alewijnse has been entrusted with the complete electrical system integration across all four OPVs. Project Manager Alex Antohi explained, “Our scope of work includes the design, engineering, installation and commissioning of all electrical systems and equipment, including switchboards, panels, cabling and structural steelwork.
“A special aspect of this project was the unique collaboration between Damen, Alewijnse and the naval architect Nevesbu to effectively implement the specific requirements and obligations of the Pakistan Navy on board the vessel. Additionally, we designed and installed a unique complex machinery control system for this ship, which fully complies with the AUT-CCS notation.”
Anti-air and anti-surface warfare
The PNS HUNAIN is a multi-purpose OPV, primarily intended for anti-air and anti-surface warfare. It will also be capable of undertaking secondary missions, including search and rescue (SAR), humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), maritime border surveillance and counter-narcotics operations. The 98-metre-long vessel features a deck space capable of accommodating two 20-feet containers equipped with mission-specific equipment modules, and it is also designed to carry a helicopter and Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs).
Primary partner
Damen selected Alewijnse as the primary partner for system integration due to their proven track record, high level of expertise and the superior quality of its electrical solutions. The partnership between Alewijnse and Damen spans many years and encompasses a wide range of naval projects including OPVs for the navies of Vietnam, Abu Dhabi, the Netherlands, Romania, Indonesia and Mexico.
Alewijnse has also contributed to other highly complex naval vessels such as the Joint Support Ship Zr.Ms. Karel Doorman, the Landing Platform Dock Zr.Ms. Rotterdam, and the new Antarctic icebreaker RSV Nuyina for Australia which entered service in 2021. The latest project nearing completion is the Combat Support Ship Den Helder, and the partners have recently embarked on a new project involving four new Anti-Submarine Warfare frigates for the Dutch and Belgian navies.
Alex Antohi commented on the collaboration with Damen, highlighting the longstanding relationship between the two companies: “Our partnership with Damen is built on trust, shared expertise, and a commitment to excellence,” continues Alex Antohi. “This successful integration of the electrical systems on board the PNS HUNAIN is yet another milestone in our shared journey.”
