Milestone on world's first ship to combine ocean research and drone deployment
Alewijnse has reached a milestone in the electrical system integration of what will be the world’s first ship to combine ocean research and drone deployment. Following intensive collaboration with all project partners, the new-purpose vessel for the Portuguese Navy was launched on 7 April 2026 at Damen Shipyards in Galați, Romania.
Launch of unique multi purpose vessel for the Portuguese Navy
The vessel’s revolutionary design makes it the first of its kind worldwide, combining the capabilities of an amphibious transport ship and a research vessel with a strong focus on drone operations. The 107-metre multi-purpose vessel is designed for missions such as oceanographic research, search and rescue, disaster relief, maritime security, and naval support operations.
For ocean research and monitoring activities the ship will be equipped with laboratories and accommodation for scientific personnel. The operations will be supported by the vessel’s ability to launch Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) and Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) from the stern. Additionally, the ship will feature a 94 by 11 metre flight deck and hangars, suitable for helicopters and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).
The first new-build ship to be built jointly by Alewijnse and Damen for Portugal
The multi-purpose vessel (MPV), named NRP D. João II is the third vessel that Alewijnse has contributed to the build for the Portuguese Navy under contract with Damen. Previously, Alewijnse participated in the mid-life upgrade of the Portuguese Multipurpose (M) frigates N.R.P. Bartolomeu Dias (F333) and N.R.P. D. Francisco de Almeida (F334). However, the completion of this project will mark the first new-build ship that Alewijnse and Damen have delivered together to the Portuguese Navy.
Alewijnse has been responsible for the complete system integration on board, including engineering, steelwork, electrical installation, commissioning, panel building, together with the supply of critical equipment such as the main and emergency switchboards, distribution panels, integrated automation systems, fire protection systems, cabling and installation materials.
Trusted partners for naval vessels
The construction of the vessel has taken place at Damen Shipyards Galati, where Alewijnse has a major facility. Project manager Catalin Androne of Alewijnse stated: “Our cooperation with Damen is based on mutual respect and trust in each other’s expertise. The innovative nature of the vessel has required both electrical and mechanical expertise, as well as close coordination between systems and all involved parties. Damen has been very satisfied with Alewijnse’s approach and performance, and we are proud to have been able to apply our extensive experience and best electrical solutions to achieve an excellent result.”
Alewijnse and Damen have been working together for many years, including on highly complex naval vessels such as the new Dutch and Belgian Anti-Submarine Warfare frigates, the Combat Support Ship HNLMS Den Helder, the PES Colombia, the Joint Support Ship HNLMS Karel Doorman, the Landing Platform Dock HNLMS Rotterdam, the Ocean Going Patrol Vessels (Holland class), and the Sigma Class Patrol Ships for the Indonesian and Mexican navies.
