An interview by ZakendoeNN with Martin Terpstra about the northern branch of Alewijnse

Strength of the Frisian maritime region

“The strength of the Frisian maritime region lies in quality, diversity, and collaboration. Just look at what is currently being built here: from the most innovative workboats and KNRM rescue vessels to a wide range of impressive superyachts. It is top-tier quality, requiring exceptional craftsmanship across every discipline, as well as close cooperation. Alewijnse is part of that outstanding technical chain,” says Terpstra.

Together with his colleagues, he forms the northern branch of Alewijnse, which has been a leading force for decades in the development of innovative, sustainable, and high-quality electrification and automation solutions for the maritime and industrial sectors.

Open mindset

“Being part of that larger ecosystem means we benefit from extensive knowledge and expertise. At the same time, here in Drachten I see how concretely and decisively we work together to deliver our projects. That open mindset in shaping and driving projects forward is characteristic of many of the partners we work with here on remarkable projects. That sense of drive truly distinguishes the region — I haven’t seen it anywhere else as strongly as here.”

Last year, Terpstra welcomed colleagues from other regions to Thialf, the technical heart of Dutch speed skating.

“The appreciation and pride you could see and feel among all those colleagues created the perfect setting to showcase innovative maritime projects from Friesland. Nationally, we may not always be in the spotlight, but a great deal is happening here!”

Wat sterk leeft in deze regio is de drive om voortdurend tot slimmere oplossingen te komen.

Drive for smarter solutions

“What strongly defines this region is the drive to continuously develop smarter solutions — the awareness that constant innovation is essential to remain at the forefront of your field. That challenge is also highly relevant for us. The realization that natural resources are becoming scarce keeps us focused. What we create translates into enormous bundles of cabling alone, with copper cores and outer layers of plastic derived from fossil fuels. The question is not only how to use less material, but also how, in the long term, to replace those materials with more sustainable alternatives. That is certainly a complex journey, but we are actively searching for solutions. It is also closely linked to pricing and procurement decisions. That is exactly why collaboration is so important.”

Learning from the best craftsmen

“Together, you can develop a shared vision for making the maritime sector more sustainable, each contributing from your own area of expertise. The Frisian region is already demonstrating this in many ways; the transition toward sustainability and circularity is being embraced more and more widely. There is a reason our motto is connecting people and technology. It is also the question we like to ask new colleagues: do you want to take on the challenge of shaping a more sustainable future together with us? Whether you join us as an intern, a vocational trainee, or an experienced professional, you immediately become part of our innovative projects. We offer intensive guidance within an open culture, where you learn from the very best professionals in the field.”
