Alewijnse participant NEC
Two companies from Nijmegen, Binnenlandse Container Terminal Nederland (BCTN) and Alewijnse sign in as a participant in the NEC (Nijmeegs Energie Convenant) as from 8 July 2009.
With this participation they agree they will save energy, and with that CO2. with a minimum of three percent per year. The NEC counts 16 participants.
The NEC is a cooperation bond of prominent companies and institutions in Nijmegen. The participants of the NEC decided at the establishment of the convenant in March 2008 to expel less greenhouse gases with a minimum of three percent per year.
The idea behind the convenant is that the worldwide climate change can only be solved by a global effort. Nijmegen is for approximately one ten thousand responsible for the total amount of CO2 expel in the world and therefore has a task to bring this amount back. Rurally the government wants to reach a two per cent energy saving per year. The municipality Nijmegen and the participants of the NEC are more ambitious, they set their ambition on three percent.
After making an ecological footprint and calculating the energy saving chances the current fourteen participants aimed for a larger ambition.
In 2010, they expel almost 30 percents less CO2 than in 2007. Half of the current 14 companies and institutions save more than nine percent in three years, the other seven expect to end up in 2010 with nine percent.
