| NEMO H2, first zero emission boat, navigates on its own power |
|
June 2011 - Fuel Cell Boat Construction Ltd, consisting of Alewijnse, Marine Service Noord and Scheepswerf De Kaap has made a successful trial on Thursday 26 May with the NEMO H2.
Several acceleration tests, emergency stop and evasive manoeuvres have been well carried out. This passenger boat of almost 22 meters is entirely electrically operated. Energy comes from the batteries which are loaded by two hydrogen fuel cells. A surprising vessel not only because of its appearance but especially because she virtually floats over water without any noise.
The project idea for the NEMO H2 has arisen in 2005. The ship became baptised on 9 December 2009 by the then alderman of environment in Amsterdam, Marijke Vos. The last year and a half the consortium members have worked hard to get all components in order concerning law and legislation. A ship that has hydrogen aboard is new as a result of which the various agencies had to evaluate all security and risk elements for this ship. THE NEMO H2 will soon be ready to service in the ditches of Amsterdam, where she will be taken in use coming summer. |
