Alewijnse installing AIS in inland waterway vessels

June 2010 - Alewijnse Marine Systems is extremely busy, installing approved Comnav AIS (automatic identification systems) in inland waterway vessels in the Netherlands. The systems are being installed at various different sites throughout the Netherlands. By providing this service, Alewijnse is accelerating the process that will enable inland waterway vessels to comply with their statutory obligation to identify themselves whilst underway in European waters.

MS Elja installed with AIS

Inland waterway vessels are being fitted with an Inland AIS transponder at Alewijnse’s sites in Rotterdam, Nijmegen and Drachten. In a few years’ time, operators of inland waterway vessels in the Netherlands and Belgium will be obliged to have an AIS transponder on board, in order to comply with the new legislation governing identification.

Alewijnse is the sole importer of the Comnav AIS, which is compact, simple to install and available in the Dutch language and has been allocated the approval number R-4-207. The success of Alewijnse's campaign, in which this AIS system is supplied at a subsidized price, has generated enquiries from all parts of the Netherlands. This was the reason why the company opted to distribute the transponders from three different sites and this has enabled Alewijnse to provide the service to vessel operators in the most efficient possible way. Alewijnse will also approve, install and commission the equipment. As it is already an approved radar expert, Alewijnse is also able to carry out servicing and maintenance.

Navigation partner

Alewijnse supplies navigation and communications systems to the commercial sector and superyachts and has many years of expertise in the area of electrotechnical installations. Alewijnse’s Navigation department was one of the first Dutch suppliers of navigation systems to obtain official certified inland radar expert. By obtaining the AIS qualification, Alewijnse has given another demonstration of its knowledge and skills when it comes to navigation and communications systems.
